Historical Highlight: Shiloh African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church 1886-1996 - 110th Anniversary |
Date |
1996 |
Description |
"In the month of January 1886, Rev. Henry Hollins, his wife Mary, his sister Katherine Morris, and related families who had been former members of a Zion church in Bennettsville, South Carolina came to California. They settled on the Lucky Baldwin ranch known as Santa Anita which is now Arcadia, California. Upon arriving in California, Rev. Hollins found a nucleus around which to start a church. He, therefore, called them together and gave leadership to those who would take responsibility, and thus we have Shiloh A.M.E. Zion church. For the first few years, meetings were held in various homes. One of the faithful members, Mr. John B. Adams, purchased a lot on the corner of Huntington and Canyon, which he donated to the congregation for a church site. Mrs. Alice Burkner and Mrs. Duncan Shaw purchased a building, donated it to Shiloh and had it moved on the property. Thus began the church home, 'Shiloh'." The original building was moved to the rear of the property at 1023 S. Canyon and is still standing. It was replaced in 1915 with a larger building for a growing congregation. Often called Shiloh AME Zion. |
