The remarkable life of "Aunt" Kate Wright, born into slavery in 1857 who came as a nurse to Monrovia in 1901. She spent the rest of her life devoted to the care of the sick and indigent. She gathered donations of lumber and labor to build small cottages on her property. She collected donations of food and medical supplies and provided food, shelter and nursing care to people of all backgrounds. From notes and a biography delivered at her commemoration as a Neighborhood Treasure at 528 E Cypress, Monrovia. |
