    Man seated at desk to right is John Wilde, who built the apartments and stores later known as the Harper block. W.H. Evans (Emporium of Fashion) was the first occupant of the north store that was where the Boxx Jewelry Store is now at 516 S Myrtle.   2. La Vista Grande Hotel - 1887

    "Grand View Hotel," later renamed the LaVista Grande was at the corner of Ivy & Lemon. It was built for Colonel Samuel Keefer, whose son John S. added the Keefer subdivision to Monrovia. The Hotel burned down in a spectacular Fire in 1916 that prompted Monrovia's first adequate piece of Fire equipment, the Seagrave. The Hotel was lighted by gas produced by its own gas plant.   3. Monroe Cottage at 225 Monroe Place - c. 1890

    The Cottage was the first home built by W.N. Monroe. It was a one-story home, which he and his wife Mary Jane and family lived in while they built their larger mansion, "The Oaks". This is a very rare photograph of it before the second story was added and lived in by his brother C.O. Monroe.

    When "The Oaks" was first built, the land south all the way to Foothill was open. The entrance was on Foothill (then called Live Oak). This image shows the south facing mansion that was home to the W.N. and Mary Jane Monroe family, who entertained many guests there.
