Julius Parker (1924-2018) was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Julius came to Monrovia in 1933 - right before the Long Beach earthquake that compromised the foundation of segregated Huntington Elementary. Julius was one of the first African American children to integrate Santa Fe Elementary. In 1943, Julius volunteered for World War II and was part of the 29th Special Service Co. and 17th Special Service Co where he honed his tenor sax talents. Upon returning to Monrovia, he married Hazel Powers and was a mechanic for L.A. County. During Monrovia High's race riots in the 1960s, Julius Parker was one of the activist parents that brought peace to the community. |
