Description |
505 N. Alta Vista - Gold Hills - McBratney home John B. McBratney operated the unique McBratney's Irish Linen Store. While he worked at whatever jobs he could find, his " brother was in the meantime developing a business in fine linens through personal solicitations, starting out first with sample books, and later, after acquiring a little stock, sold direct to the homes, which business was enlarged by the use of a horse and buggy. The growth of the business as well as the failing health of the older brother made it necessary for John B. to assist in this work." he took over the business and it grew to become a large department story on Mytle Avenue. John had married Elsie Shorten in Ireland and they had three children: Sheila, William Gerald, and Kathleen May. See John L. Wiley, History of Monrovia, 1927, p 130-131. |
