"1936 Mrs. E.B Norman, First White woman married in Monrovia. 1937 Gilbert Cartter, First White child born in Monrovia. 1938 Mrs. James Foshay, wife of Monrovia's first school principal. 1939 George O. Monroe, son of W.N. Monroe, Founder. 1940 Mrs. Frank W. Burr, came to Monrovia in 1889. 1942 Mrs. E.S. Armstrong, wife of Monrovia's first zanjero [person in charge of water distribution]. 1948 William Higuera, attended first auction of lots." [It's worth noting that besides the role of race clear in this note, that Kathleen Bartle (also White) was born before Gilbert Cartter. There did not seem to be a comparable recognition of the first girl born or non-white boy.] |
