The Monrovia Hotel 1886 |
Date |
1886 |
Description |
The hotel (also known as the Monrovia Hotel, the Mills Hotel and the Wisaria Hotel) was the first building to be erected in the new town. It was built by John C. Anderson. The addition on the left part of the picture doubled the size of the hotel. It was added in January 1887 (mentioned in Monrovia Planet Jan. 22, 1887). At the time of this picture, the hotel was owned by C.C.. Hotchkiss, who made the addition. He had bought the hotel the week of December 18, 1887 and sold it by April 1,1887 to Mr. Baker of Pasadena for $11,500 cash. It was located on the east side of Myrtle Avenue just north of the alley between Lemon and Orange Avenues -- Lots 11 and 12 of Block K on the 1887 Map of Monrovia. The figure at the left is believed to be Mr. Hotchkiss who was identified by his nephew, T.M. Hotchkiss August 15, 1985. C.C. Hotchkiss was from Davis County, Iowa and was married to the sister of W.M. Monroe. |
